Cedar Hill State Park
Sprawling along the shore of Joe Pool Lake, the Cedar Hill State Park is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Visitors often come here to swim, boat, and fish in the lake, and the park offers boat ramps, lighted fishing jetties, and even a perch pond for younger children to fish in. Dinosaur Valley State Park
Home to hundreds of fossilized dinosaur tracks, Dinosaur Valley State Park is another great place to go if your kids are crazy about dinosaurs. Most of the tracks are in the riverbed, and although they can be a bit tricky to spot, you can pick up a map of the best places to see them at the Visitor's Center. There are also 20 miles of trails for hiking and biking, and equestrians are welcome to bring their horses and explore the South Primitive Area. Nestled in the heart of Texas Hill Country, the Foxfire Log Cabins do an excellent job of creating a welcoming family-friendly atmosphere. Meridian State Park

Mustang Island State Park, Texas
Situated on a barrier island on the Gulf Coast, Mustang Island State Park is named for the wild mustangs that lived here until the late 1800s. There are five miles of beachfront perfect for swimming, strolling, and soaking up the sun, and there are some beautiful picnic areas perfect for families. There's also a 20-mile paddling trail for canoers and kayakers, which passes through some excellent fishing areas. Padre Island National Seashore
Stretching for 70 miles along the Gulf of Mexico, the Padre Island National Seashore is the world's longest undeveloped barrier island. The unspoiled wilderness offers ample opportunities for paddling, fishing, and hiking, and between the middle of June and the end of August, you might even be able to see a sea turtle hatchling release if you're willing to wake up early. Most of the beach is open to four-wheel-drive vehicles, and camping is permitted along most of the beach as well as long as you have a permit. There are also several campgrounds with basic amenities.

Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area, Texas
Centered around a 45-acre man-made lake, the Ratcliff Lake Recreation Area has been a popular recreation spot since it was created in the mid-1930s. There are three hiking trails in the park, two of which are especially well-suited to families, and kids can swim in the lake or keep themselves busy on the playground. The lake is also excellent for fishing, and although electric motors are permitted on the water, many people choose to fish from the pier as well.
