Aransas Pass (Lydia Ann) Lighthouse
One of a string of lighthouses built in the 19th century to provide navigational aid along the 400 mile length of Texas coastline on the Gulf of Mexico, the Aransas Pass was completed in 1858. The lighthouse is located at Aransas Pass, a gap between the barrier islands which protect the port of Corpus Christi. During the Civil War, the Confederate Army attempted to destroy the lighthouse using explosives which toppled the top part of the tower and destroyed part of the staircase. Today the restored historic structure is privately owned; you can view it from a distance or join a kayak tour which passes close by.
