It all started over fifty years ago in Bridgehampton, New York, when young Carolyn Lester Snyder started her first farm stand built by her father, Albert Lester, who inherited the 20-acre, 250-year-old Round Swamp Homestead. Carolyn’s little red wagon loaded with tomatoes, cucumbers and a few ears of corn grew into a local country market with shelves loaded with baked goods, breads, muffins, scones, pies, coffee and pound cakes, fresh juices, teas, jams, jellies, prepared meals and sides, local fresh produce and fish. Much of their produce goes into finished products, simple, comfort food made from scratch with the best quality ingredients grown in the area.

Bridge Gardens is a true Bridgehampton’s gem – a lush and unique public and demonstration garden with five acres filled with hedgerows, a variety of shrubs and perennial and annual flowers, and a curious four-quadrant herb garden growing ornamental, culinary, medicinal and textile plants. The garden was donated to the Trust in 2008 by James Kilpatric and Harry Neyens. While maintaining the garden’s original characteristics, the Trust introduced new elements and programs according to the organization’s conservation mission. That includes a large vegetable garden that supplies local food pantries, Community Garden plots, and low-impact, environmentally aware gardening practices. Besides being a host to many educational programs , Bridge Gardens also hosts art classes, music performances, children’s programming and more.

The Dan Flavin Art Institute

The Dan Flavin Art Institute was established in 1983 in Bridgehampton, New York in a former fire station that was for a while used as a church. The institute was established to showcase the artwork of the 20th century fluorescent light artist Dan Flavin as a permanent exhibition space for the artist’s meditative installations. The architect Richard Gluckman, the Dia Art Foundation and Flavin, who lived in the nearby East Hampton hamlet of Wainscott transformed the old building into a museum that now houses Flavin’s light installations created between 1963 and 1981. The second floor has a hypnotizing sequence of neon artworks mounted between angled walls, completed in 1976 to three-inch radiant technicolor grid. The ground floor hosts rotating special exhibitions. Flavin was a modernist artist who pioneered the use of fluorescent light as a form of fine art. He is considered one the most important visual artists of the 20th century.

Almond

Almond

Since it opened in 2001, Almond became a go-to spot in the Hamptons for locals, celebrities, tourists and restaurateurs. This bustling, trendy French bistro occupies a 100-year old building on the corner in the heart of Bridgehampton. Romantic and cozy, it retained the original tin ceiling and chic white subway tile. Added is hand-carved bar, interesting lighting and that difficult to describe bistro vibe. The focus of Almond is on the farm-to-table menu, distinct French influence and a respectable wine list. The menu is nevertheless modern American, so expect such favorites as Le Grande Macaroni and Cheese but also a meatless Monday and raw bar. The menu is seasonal and it changes often depending on what is available, so be prepared to be surprised.
